Sericite is a fine-grained, platy form of Muscovite Mica. It is composed of thin, transparent to translucent flakes that have a pearly luster. Sericite is usually colorless or has a pale gray, silver, or white appearance.
Specification:
- Chemical formula: KAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2
- CAS Number: 12001-26-2
- Appearance: Fine-grained flakes with a pearly luster
- Color: Colorless to pale gray, silver, or white
- Mohs hardness: 2.5-3.0
- Specific gravity: 2.7-3.0 g/cm3
Features:
-
Lamellar Structure: Sericite has a unique lamellar structure, consisting of thin, parallel flakes. This structure imparts excellent slip and glide properties to products, making it ideal for cosmetics and personal care applications.
-
High Aspect Ratio: The high aspect ratio of Sericite flakes provides improved coverage and opacity in cosmetic formulations, allowing for better color development and coverage on the skin.
-
Natural and Non-Toxic: Sericite is a naturally occurring mineral and is considered non-toxic and safe for use in various applications.
-
Heat and Chemical Resistance: It exhibits good resistance to heat and chemicals, making it suitable for use in coatings, plastics, and adhesives that require durability and chemical stability.
-
Low Abrasiveness: Sericite has a low abrasiveness, making it gentle on the skin and suitable for use in cosmetic and personal care products.
Specification:
The specifications of Sericite mica may vary depending on the specific source and intended application. Here are some general specifications:
- Chemical Formula: KAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2
- Mineral Composition: Muscovite (Potassium Aluminum Silicate Hydroxide)
- Particle Size: Typically ranges from 2 to 150 micrometers
- pH Value: Generally around 7-8 (neutral)
- Moisture Content: Typically less than 1%
- Specific Gravity: Approximately 2.7-3.0 g/cm³
Details
Mica powder has the following functions in cosmetics:
(1) with good chemical stability, mica particles are fine, resistant to acid and alkali and aging, and have good shielding function for ultraviolet rays.
(2) as a natural mineral product, it has high chemical stability and is completely inert. Therefore, it is safe, non-toxic and harmless, and suitable for cosmetics.
(3) it can shield ultraviolet and infrared rays, so it is an excellent anti-ultraviolet agent for cosmetics.
(4) due to the small size and discontinuous coverage on the skin, the air permeability of the skin is not affected and the skin feels comfortable.
(5) water cannot penetrate mica and can inhibit the evaporation of skin moisture when used in moisturizing products. Therefore, the protective layer can delay moisture evaporation and improve skin moisturization.

Mica(Cas 12001-26-2) Usage
Description |
Mica is a versatile mineral with natural light-reflecting properties, widely used in cosmetics for its ability to add shimmer and radiance. It is favored by organic and natural beauty brands, safe for most skin types, and available in both naturally mined and synthetic forms. However, precautions should be taken to minimize dust inhalation in industrial settings. |
Uses |
While mica is generally safe for cosmetic use, caution should be exercised to minimize the inhalation of mica dust, particularly in industrial settings where exposure levels may be higher. |

, N Engl J Med 2007; 357:1293-1300
Antibodies against MICA alleles were detected in 217 of the 1910 patients (11.4%). The presence of MICA antibodies was associated with renal-allograft rejection. The mean (±SE) 1-year graft-survival rate was 88.3±2.2% among recipients with anti-MICA antibodies as compared with 93.0±0.6% among recipients without anti-MICA antibodies (P=0.01).
Hydration forces between mica surfaces in electrolyte solutions
R.M. Pashley
, Advances in Colloid and Interface Science Volume 16, Issue 1, July 1982, Pages 57-62
By subtraction of the DLVO-regulation theory from the total measured force the net hydration force was obtained for mica surfaces apparently fully covered with adsorbed cations. The magnitude of this extra force followed the series Na+ > Li+ > K+ > Cs+ and, in each case, could be described by a double-exponential decay.
